The Wine Dictionary
The Wine Dictionary is a place where we can all pitch in and build a collection of meanings for common and uncommon wine related terms. It'll be a huge help for those people who are only just starting to enjoy wine.
You are welcome to add a term to the dictionary even if you don't have a meaning for it. Hopefully another wine lover will see it and add their meaning.
If you see a word that already has a meaning added to it, but you think you can explain it better, by all means add your meaning to the word as well. If there are multiple meanings added for a word, the meanings will be ordered by their rating. You can rate a meaning up
or down
by using the buttons to the right of the meaning.
Auslese [owsh-lays]
- "Auslese wines are made from grapes picked from selected very ripe bunches in the autumn (late November-early December), and have to be hand picked. Generally Auslese wine can be made in only the best harvest years that have been sufficiently warm." - By WineGuy Full definitions>>>
Tannin [Teh-nehn]
- "Tannins can be described as leaving a dry and puckered feeling with a "furriness" in the mouth that can be compared to a stewed tea, which is also very tannic. The tannins find their way into a wine, particularly red wine, from the grape skins, stems and seeds. Wine aged in wooden barrels can also take on tannin from the barrels if the wood used is high in tannin." - By WineGuy Full definitions>>>
Fruity [frooh-tee]
- "A fruity wine is one in which fruit flavors dominate the aroma and taste. Often these wines are easy-drinking and light." - By WineGuy Full definitions>>>
